Lewis University 2011 S.U.R.E Program

Olivia Chesniak Olivia Chesniak
Olivia is from Chicago, IL and is pursuing a degree in Chemistry with plans to graduate in May 2012. She is a member of Delta Epsilon Sigma, a national Catholic Honors Society, and is planning on continuing her chemical education in graduate school. Olivia's summer research focuses on the production of flexible anodic nanomaterials for biomimetic solar energy production. Outside of the chemistry lab, Olivia enjoys cooking and spending time outdoors.

Elizabeth De Waard Elizabeth De Waard
Elizabeth is from Dwight, IL and is a junior Physics Major at Lewis University. For the summer, she is continuing work on a computer simulation project with her mentor, Dr. Kozminski. This work involves examining possible materials for detector shielding in a muon collider. Her non-scientific interests include tennis, reading, and painting. She hopes to one day attend graduate school for either education or a higher degree in Physics.

Jimmy Fitman James Fitman
James is entering his junior year at Lewis University in the fall semester with a major in biology and is soon to be pursuing a minor in chemistry. The project that he is working on for the S.U.R.E. program involves synthesizing silver nanoparticles that possess antimicrobial capabilities. James will be working with both the synthesis process in the chemistry laboratory and the testing process in the microbiology laboratory. His mentors for the project are Dr. Jason Keleher and Dr. James Rago. During his free time outside of research, James enjoys playing basketball, disc golfing, listening to music, and spending quality time with friends and family.

Mike Korby Michael Korby
Originally from Elgin, Michael (or as most individuals call him, Korby) spends his days residing somewhere between there and the Romeoville area. He is currently a Junior at Lewis University and is pursuing a degree in Computer Science, paired with a minor in Chemistry. When not working on his project, Mike spends most of his time working, whether it be at Target, or at Lewis University's ITSO department. His project for the 2011 S.U.R.E. program involves using Android applications to study the effect frustration has on individuals. He hopes that the experience gained from his research project will aid him in developing applications part time. When not working, Mike enjoys napping, watching movies, spending time with family/friends, and, of course, Facebook.

Alex Pecherek Alex Pecherek
Alex Pecherek is a junior at Lewis University studying biology. He is a member of the Tri-Beta Biology Honors Society. Alex participated in the 2011 Summer Undergraduate Research Experience where under the guidance of Dr. Jerry Kavouras studied the influence of environmental factors in the development of E. coli and S. aureus biofilms in the hopes that the information will lead to better control methods of these nosocomial pathogens. Outside of school, Alex plays rugby and enjoys relaxing days on the beach.

Brian Wilhelm        Brian Wilhelm
Brian is from Manchester, IA and is pursuing a degreee in Computer Science. His summer research focuses on defining patterns in financial markets and working to create software that is able to make predictions of future movements based on historical data and Fibonacci sequencing. Once algorithms are developed, Brian will work to automate trading signals. Brian enjoys spending time with his family and playing the guitar when he has time. Brian hopes to enroll in Lewis University's 5 year accellerated MSIS program and work as a security analyst after graduation.
